Sandpoint

When things went south, perhaps the greatest focus was preserving Sandpoint’s way of life. As the town packed into the magic inscribed Glassworks it was filled with every history, lore, and founding work that made the town great. As time went on, the people maintained humanity by clinging to the memories and ways of the past, ever devoted to one day returning to their way of life.  This is how it looked then:

Geography

Resting in a natural cove along the cliff-lined Lost Coast region of Varisia, on the edge of the Varisian Gulf, Sandpoint is a medium-sized city that exemplifies the diverse people of the country. While only about thirty miles northeast of the city of Magnimar and technically under its rule, Sandpoint benefits from its isolated position in its ability to remain fairly independent. The most striking feature is the ruined beacon of the city that extends high above the cliffs of the coast, reflecting the ancient empire of Thassilon that existed here centuries before the present town was settled. After generations of seclusion from the world many question what they will return to when the Glassworks opens again.

Government

While technically a holding of Magnimar, Sandpoint's isolated nature provides it a sizable amount of independence. The town is governed by a mayor (Kendra Deverin at the time of entering the kaer) but the four founding families of Sandpoint still hold considerable influence, if not politically then economically. As Sandpoint endured their containment, it was important to continue the tradition of the Deverinian leadership, but that became more and more of a face as times grew more challenging and simply being wise in governmental policy took a back seat to panic, anxiety, and threats to the kaer. To better guide the direction they took, a sub-council was formed initially from founding families, but was slowly replaced by those of ability over those of resources.

History

Though Sandpoint is a relatively new settlement, it has had its fair share of notable events in its short history. From the violent nature of its founding to the "late unpleasantness" of 4702 AR, to the goblin and giant attacks of 4707 AR, this quaint town is no stranger to the same (if not worse) terrors that plague larger, more dangerous cities. During the Dawn of Grim Tides, Sandpoint was greatly challenged by goblin and giant raids, assassination attempts on various important figures, and even demons that settled in the surrounding region. To this day, one of the most inspiring tales the troubadours tell is that of a band of everyday people of various origins that came together for a common good to save Sandpoint in its most dire time when it was attacked by giants and dragon forces. Some of the heroes even settled down in Sandpoint and started families. The Vancaskerkin family, founded by the great warrior Orik and his wife Marilis were a guiding light through the dark times of seclusion and confinement. Marilis is largely responsible for the strength of Desna’s worship, despite losing much of her healing magic. While no one truly understands the distance, the gods took from mortals, none question her faith. Eashen, the wizard of the group, is thought to have sacrificed himself to close the kaer when it was attacked as it being sealed, though some claim to have seen him magic himself away.

Founding

Four powerful families from Magnimar had designs on settling the region where Sandpoint now stands, and rather than work against each other, they consolidated their efforts and formed the Sandpoint Mercantile League. These four families, the Kaijitsu (glassmakers and jewelers), the Valdemars (shipbuilders and carpenters), the Scarnettis (loggers and millers), and the Deverins (farmers and brewers), sailed north to claim their land after securing the rights from the Magnimar Charterhouse. Yet when they arrived, they found the place already settled by a particularly large tribe of Varisians, who held the region as a traditional place to spend the winter.

Unwilling to change course, the Sandpoint Mercantile League began a series of talks with the Varisians, promising them an important place in the new township. Unfortunately, after a week of talks seemed to go nowhere, an impatient man named Alamon Scarnetti took matters into his own hands. Rounding up a group of his brothers and cousins, the Scarnettis mounted a murderous raid on the Varisian camp, intending to kill them all and leave evidence implicating local goblins for the deed. Yet the Scarnettis, too drunk and overconfident, only managed to kill five Varisians before they were themselves forced to flee, leaving behind three of their own. The incident caused a several-month delay, but eventually amends were made and the town of Sandpoint was born.

As the Scarnetti family was last seen during the siege of giants, they are all but a history lesson now. The Kaikitsu family flourished as Ameiko was well loved by the town and continued the tradition of the Rusty Dragon once in the kaer.

Many Sieges of Sandpoint; The Late Unpleasantness

The most notable events in the short history of Sandpoint occurred in the winter of 4702, and are referred to locally as "the late unpleasantness." The people of Sandpoint would prefer to put the unsavory disasters behind them, but five years is not long enough to fully forget these events. Within the course of only a few years, a string of murders by a ruthless killer known as "Chopper" and a great fire which destroyed the iconic chapel and many of the surrounding buildings ravaged the town both physically and emotionally. A grand cathedral has since been built and the people of Sandpoint are finally optimistic about their future.

Inhabitants

The inhabitants of Sandpoint are primarily human, but like any civilized population center, a smattering of other races can be found throughout the area. The human population is fairly evenly divided between those of both Varisian and Chelaxian descent, and the number of Shoanti making the town their home has increased steadily over the years. Notable personages of the town include Mayor Kendra Deverin, Sheriff Belor Hemlock, Deputy Galthanas Silverthorne and the heads of the other three noble families, Ameiko KaijitsuTitus Scarnetti and Ethram Valdemar.

Notable Locations

For a relatively small town, Sandpoint offers a wide variety of services and interesting locations. In addition to a local CathedralGarrison, and Town Hall, the community boasts over half a dozen inns and taverns, a local Theater, the Sandpoint Glassworks, and a fair selection of other businesses.

Religion

The views, morality, and reflecting faiths of Sandpoint are represented by Abadar, Desna, Erastil, Gozreh, Sarenrae, Shelyn.

Once inside the kaer, worship shifted and settled as priorities changed. Abadar was all but forgotten to all but the most devoted as money became nigh-worthless and his tenants slowly eroded. Desna increased in strength, much to the faith and goodness of Marilis Vancaskerkin and the flock she attracted.  Erastril’s faithful endured, though much more so due to the desire to hold to civilization and less to the ties to nature…at least while nature was so far away. Gozreh entirely vanished from the worshippers in all but fables. Some claimed the god had died in battle against evils, some say he left the world entirely- but of course that’s simply the guessing of frightened mortals. Sarenrae was largely relevant in Sandpoint due to a particularly devoted adventurer, and while the ideals were popular with the people, never had a huge following. Not long after the kaer closed, within days, a phenomenon occurred which at the very least made people mention the goddess; the bonfire in the center of the kaer took on a life of its own. It didn’t require fuel, produce smoke, and emitted an aura of purity that many can only explain as the work of Sarenrae. Shelyn’s worship initially took the worst hit, as beauty was seemingly taken from the world. However, with the importance of art as an outlet and the wonders it brought to the kaer, is endured and surged with a new life.
